ART AUCTION AT THE DEICHTORHALLEN RAISED OVER 500,000 EURO
46 pieces by 44 internationally renowned artists were auctioned to mark the 30th anniversary of the Deichtorhallen Hamburg. Galleries, collectors and above all international artists such as Monica Bonvicini, Robert Longo, Ugo Rondinone, Sarah Moon, Thomas Ruff, Charline von Heyl and Jonathan Meese each donated one of their works, some of which were conceived specifically for the ART AUCTION organised by the patrons’ of Deichtorhallen Hamburg.
In total, over 520,000 euro was raised for the Deichtorhallen Hamburg. The money will be used to support the programme of one the most important exhibition venues for contemporary art and photography in Europe. Julia von Jenisch, Chair of the Förderkreis Deichtorhallen Hamburg and Dirk Luckow, Artistic Director of the Deichtorhallen, were delighted by the sensational outcome: “The proceeds will help us continue to exhibit art at the highest international level in the Deichtorhallen Hamburg into the future.”
Attracted by the anticipated reasonable prices, around 420 guests attended the exclusive auction at the invitation of the patrons of the Deichtorhallen. Following the welcome by Julia von Jenisch and Dirk Luckow, the renowned auctioneer Dr Philipp Herzog von Württemberg of Philipp Württemberg Art Advisory, former Chair of Sotheby’s Europe, conducted the auction.
The most expensive lot, the small blue yellow red mountain by Ugo Rondinone, was purchased for 48,000 euro by a telephone bidder. Charline von Heyl’s Double Duck went for 42,000 euro to a written bid in the hall. The artist, Murray Gaylard, who was in attendance, could barely believe it when his work, Single White Female, went under the hammer for more than four times the valuation. As with Gaylard, there were veritable bidding wars for the lower priced works, in particular among attendees, including many patrons.
